I believe the sidebar to be the most underrated/underused aspect of personal blogging
So you better believe I put all of my effort that should be directed toward composing lucid, well-written entries into this sidebar. If you know what's good for you, you'll read all of it. In fact, you could probably skip the blog after you finish all of this.
My links are all to websites I vouch for and encourage the support of. And there's also some wiki entries to explain some pop culture jargon I might throw attcha. I'm pretentious that way.
I know what some of you are thinking:
Why should I care if you (Nate) vouch for a website? Who the hell are you (Nate) anyway? Some kind of...jerk....who assumes I can't think of a good insult(yep)?
However, the truth about my identity and credibility is far more sinister and unsettling than your delicate psyches can process...So, to clear up any confusion, I have a one question FAQ section.

FAQ #1: Who's this Nate guy? I hear he's a jerk.

- I am a 23 year old white male. I was born in a hospital in DC, but raised in a cream-colored house with dark red window shades in PG County MD. I went to a year of acting school in Philly after graduating high school, but dropped out after freshman year. I spent two and a half agonizing years working for an unnamed Swedish furniture retailer (IKEA) in College Park MD before I decided I'd had enough and reapplied to college. I am currently studying pop culture(ish things) at the tres hoighty-toighty hippie institute known as Hampshire College up here in sunny Amherst MA. The reason I started this blog? I am obsessed with pop culture, especially its larger historical implications and contexts. Everything from movies to gossip sites to online comics. I can and will discuss everything that pops into my head. So deal.

- Comics Curmudgeon, The (I can't explain how funny this site is, but I can tell you that after reading it, you will forever approach Mary Worth w/ a preemptive giggle...but don't blame me if your friends hate your new Rex Morgan jokes)
- Entertainment Weekly's Official Site (I don't know, I don't know, I don't know. My relationship with EW is historical, and I cannot fully explain it to anyone...I included this link in the interests of full disclosure)
- Josh Timmerman's Pop Culture Blog (I don't always agree with Josh T, but I've read him for years, and he's a compelling pop culture critic...in recent years, his new wife Teresa has become co-writer, providing an interesting dynamic)
- Listology (almost endless hours of fun for my fellow list junkies, I've been a member since middle school. you can find young me under AAA and more recent stuff I've written under AAA v. 2.0, but I also recommend checking out everthing lbangs wrote)
- Nathaniel Rogers' Film Experience Blog (my favorite film critic since I was 13, this guy had more of a hand in shaping my movie taste than anyone else [and, I've noticed, a whole lot of people orbiting OscarWatch in the past 8 years are big fans of his]. he's mostly known for his Oscar coverage, but his personal taste in film is impeccable)
- SOMB (a forum I frequent that is hosted by the website for a Chicago public radio show. great place to hear about new stuff, no matter what you're into...except hip-hop, country, gospel...okay mostly metal, electronica, indie...you know, young white people music)
- Television W/O Pity (a snarky-ass fanboy summary site, basically. but that really does not do it justice. if you are a TV geek, this is a necessary read at least once)
- The Backstage (a website that started up on the backs of a lot of ex-OscarWatchers...they have a really fun Top 40 songs of the week poll in the forums...I happen to like a lot of the writers for the staff, but more on a familiar message board basis than as a reader)
- The Filmsnobs (I haven't been reaing quite as frequently in the past few years, but these guys' reviews have always been a quality mix of snarkiness and cultural analysis)
- TV Heaven (basically, if you like to download tv, but don't like apps, this is a pretty convenient resource. use it wisely. also, consider a rapidshare membership, it comes in handy more often than you'd think [thanks Eliot])
Webcomics that bring me unexplainable joy
- A Softer World (this is not exactly unknown, but my friend Marj turned me onto this long ago. recommended for those looking for a webcomic that is alternately lovely, sad, and uncomfortably funny)
- Achewood (the funniest webcomic around, bar none, and one of the funniest all-around comics ever...start from the beginning...you'll thank me)
- The Perry Bible Fellowship (even if you don't recognize the name, you've probably seen at least one of these...very morbid stuff makes for great comedy... Far Side : Newspapers :: Perry Bible Fellowship : Internet)
